Police report more gun robberies at Mahaica, Berbice
FOUR motorcycle riding gunmen robbed Dollar Rescue Supermarket, at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, of $140,000 and jewellery Monday, Police reported yesterday.

The report said it happened about 13:55 h when businessman/proprietor Basdeo Persaud, 57, together with three employees, cashier, Parbattie, 27, salesgirl 24-year-old Natasha Beekham and domestic Bibi Waheed, 30, all of Unity, Mahaica, were in the shop.

The robbers arrived on two motorbikes, held the victims at gunpoint and escaped with the booty.

Police said Persaud and Waheed were assaulted by the bandits and had to be treated for injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GHPC) and sent away.

Meanwhile, in Berbice, investigations are continuing into an early morning robbery at Reliance, East Canje, yesterday.

In that incident, an overseas-based Guyanese, 53-year-old Shivkumar Ramdin and his relatives were relieved of an undisclosed sum of money and jewels, also by four armed men.

According to the Police, that heist took place at 02:30 h and Annawattie Punwa, Mahendra Punwa and Cindy Mohamed were also asleep in the house when they were aroused by the men brandishing guns and a cutlass.

The bandits gained entry by removing some louvre window panes and forced the occupants to hand over their cash and valuables.

Mahendra Punwa suffered minor wounds, to his right forearm and hand, inflicted by the cutlass-toting bandit and was treated for them but not admitted at New Amsterdam Hospital.
