A JEWELLERY establishment on Albert Street, Alberttown, Georgetown was Friday night robbed of $1M in jewellery.

But the owners who reside at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, only discovered the robbery yesterday morning when they went to open the place for business.

The establishment known as Vishnu's Jewellery, is owned by Dharampaul Budhu, 38, and his wife Shetal Ramcharitar.

They told the Chronicle that on Friday last they closed up at about 18:30 hrs and headed home.

However, on returning yesterday morning they found both the and wooden doors open and on closer examination they saw the padlocks that secured the doors had been cut.

On entering the premises they discovered a chest containing a quantity of jewellery and all the other jewellery that were in the showcases gone.

A report was made to the nearby Alberttown Police Station and a policeman came shortly after, took fingerprints and carried out investigations.

A suspect was held and was in Police custody up to late yesterday.

Budhu's mother, Mrs. Olive Budhu told the Chronicle that the suspect went to their home at Annandale on Friday at about 11:00 hrs asking for her son, and she told him that he has to check at the Albert Street jewellery establishment.

Budhu's wife related that the suspect went at about 18:00 hrs, enquiring if the pair of earrings he had ordered was completed, because he had to send it overseas yesterday morning.

However, it was explained that the earrings were not completed and an arrangement was made for him to come yesterday morning to uplift the jewellery.

But when they went to open for business yesterday morning, they discovered that the store had been cleaned out of all the jewellery, Ramcharitar said.
