Shot jeweller succumbs

The jeweller who was shot in her neck by bandits one week ago, died last evening at the Georgetown Hospital.

Ashimini Doodnauth, 55, of Lot 173 Pike Street, Kitty was shot by one of two bandits in front of her home.

Up to late yesterday afternoon she was a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and hospital sources had said that she was stable.

Her relatives were reluctant to make any comment to this newspaper when contacted last evening.

So far police have been unable to apprehend anyone for the shooting and investigations are continuing.

Last Tuesday around 3 pm, Doodnauth and her husband Tanieram closed up their jewellery store in the Stabroek Market and left for home. They caught a taxi but as they arrived and were about to disembark the taxi two men, each holding a handgun, approached and demanded a shopping bag they had in their possession. At some point during the course of the robbery the businesswoman was shot once in the neck.

Sahadeo Lall

The gunmen then ordered Sahadeo Lall, the taxi driver out of his car and drove off leaving the injured woman lying on the road in an unconscious state. They took the bag, which contained Tanieram's licensed firearm, and a quantity of fruits, vegetables and food bowls. The car was later recovered abandoned in `A' Field Sophia.

The woman's death has come amidst a flare-up of violent crimes in the city and other parts of the country.
