Gunmen beat, rob Kaneville family

A Kaneville, East Bank Demerara family who operates a small grocery store is still reeling from shock and loss after they were assaulted and robbed by two gunmen Saturday night.

Robbery victim, Sheik Alli, 19, of Lot 254 Block Two Kaneville, said about 19:35 h Saturday he was in his back yard about to take a bath when he was suddenly confronted by two men armed with guns and one of them masked.

He said the gunmen began beating him and forced him upstairs where they also assaulted his family members.The bandits ransacked the house and escaped with $70,000 in cash from the day sales, jewels valued at about $120,000, and four cellular phones.

The teenager’s father, Shameer Mohammed, 35, told the Chronicle that when he saw the intruders with his son it was too late to act, and he too was beaten when he tried to stop them.

The robbers also terrorized his wife, Fazie, and his two daughters.

Mr. Mohammed, who is Chairman of the Kaneville Citizen Development Committee, said that soon after the bandits left his house he called the Grove Police Station and informed them of the robbery. They arrived at his home about two and a half hours later and took statements.

The still tramautised family told the Chronicle that they opened the small business about five years ago and this is the first time they were robbed.
