The Moolsammys own Mala’s Fashion and Variety Store, at Lot 100 Regent Street, also in the city and were there while the children attended school at the time of the 13:30 hrs blaze.

Neighbours said, shortly before then, they smelled something burning and saw thick, black smoke emanating from the house.

Marvelling at how quickly the flames spread, they said they never before witnessed such an occurrence.

Mrs. Moolsammy broke down in tears on seeing what was left of her home and, although unable to exactly quantify their loss, speculated that it would be in tens of millions of dollars.

She said they stored garments in the bottom flat for sale in Regent Street.

Lamenting what happened, she said she worked very hard “in rain, sun or stars” to pay for the property which she purchased about 18 years ago.

But even as she wept, she blamed the destruction on Guyana Power & Light (GPL) negligence.

Her neighbours said they, too, saw wires taking current to her house sparking regularly over the last few weeks.

Moolsammy said she repeatedly complained to GPL and, on one occasion when electricity was being disconnected in the area, she had asked for her problem to be fixed but the technician replied that he did not come to do that and was doing what he had to do.

She said she asked the man if he would fix it when the house is burnt but he did not reply.

Meanwhile, during the conflagration, nearby businesses, including New Thriving restaurant, were forced to close their doors and residents hurriedly put their main switches in the off position and abandoned their homes.

Some confirmed that the heat was intense and commended the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) for containing the flames to the one in a neighbourhood where houses are situated in close proximity to each other.
